Named after Janus in Roman mythology, January literally means ‘door to the year.’ As 2010’s door closes, 2011’s door opens full of hope and opportunity. What do you plan to accomplish this year?
It’s safe to say the gyms will be crowded and tobacco companies may see a drop in sales, but how many times have we all set these expectations for the New Year, and maintained it for more than the first couple weeks? Resolutions are easy to declare, but as our busy lives continue to pass it becomes seemingly more difficult to hold ourselves to these promises.
January’s birthstone is the garnet which represents constancy, so maybe it’s time to take the literal meanings behind this catalyst first month and work towards maintaining an improved way of living.
Beating your addiction was the first step, staying in recovery is the part that takes work. If you ask me, the ‘work’ is where most people stagger. “I’ll go [to the gym] tomorrow” gives a sense of momentary satisfaction, and is a lot easier than strapping on those running shoes, or picking up a book rather than a cigarette. Utilize your resources, find a buddy in recovery to push each other through the process, and remember to stay honest with yourself.
Make this January different from the rest—a life in recovery is more than a promise, but a renewed lifestyle with hopes of fulfilling old dreams, achieving great feats, or just living healthier…Living happier.
